The\u00a0SKF\u00a0Circular Economy Centre has secured a new customer on the strength of its capabilities in bringing deliverables that combine optimised\u00a0operations\u00a0and cost savings with\u00a0environmental\u00a0benefits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aligning with\u00a0SKF\u2019s circular economy drive, the organisation continues to innovate its\u00a0products,\u00a0systems\u00a0and\u00a0services. One of\u00a0SKF\u2019s greatest strengths is the development of new technologies and value adding\u00a0solutions\u00a0to assist customers in achieving their economic and\u00a0environmental\u00a0sustainability goals.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis proud reputation prompted the customer, who is a leading operator in the\u00a0mining\u00a0sector based in Gauteng, to approach us in August 2022 for a\u00a0bearing\u00a0remanufacturing solution,\u201d says Lourens Pretorius,\u00a0SKF\u00a0Circular Economy Centre Manager. \u201cThe customer later called for a further eighteen additional gearbox\u00a0bearings\u00a0to be sent in to\u00a0SKF\u2019s Reman Centre for assessment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

What initially started with a request for a site inspection of SRBs (Spherical Roller\u00a0Bearings) while still on their respective shafts to determine if they were suitable for remanufacturing, was followed by a fully integrated solution from the\u00a0SKF\u00a0Circular Economy Centre. This included the supply of new and refurbished\u00a0bearings, mounting tools and local\u00a0engineering\u00a0components\u00a0as well as additional support\u00a0services\u00a0such as professional\u00a0bearing\u00a0fitment and a condition monitoring solution that called in the expertise of\u00a0SKF\u2019s Mechanical Field\u00a0Service\u00a0and Connected Technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe remanufactured a total of 25\u00a0bearings\u00a0and replaced three\u00a0bearings\u00a0that did not pass our remanufacture assessment requirements,\u201d explains Pretorius. \u201cWe also supplied eleven new units as well as local\u00a0engineering\u00a0components\u00a0comprising new\u00a0bearing\u00a0sleeves and lock nuts.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pretorius weighs in on the value that\u00a0SKF\u2019s specialist Remanufacturing Centre adds. \u201cIn the true sense of what makes up a circular economy, our remanufacturing capabilities enable us to reduce, reuse and recycle. Instead of being replaced, remanufactured\u00a0bearings\u00a0are given a new lease on life and are reused. As remanufactured\u00a0bearings\u00a0are much more cost-effective than new\u00a0bearings\u00a0we have kept costs down significantly for our customer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMoreover, the waiting period for certain large size\u00a0bearings\u00a0can be up to several months but as we are able to remanufacture\u00a0bearings\u00a0within three to five working days we have substantially reduced the lead times, getting our customer fully operational within only a few days.\u201d Pretorius adds that\u00a0SKF\u2019s remanufactured\u00a0bearings\u00a0and units conform to the same geometric, form and quality specifications as new\u00a0SKF\u00a0products. The remanufactured\u00a0components\u00a0carry a one-year conformance warranty which is testament to the high quality and reliability of these\u00a0products.<\/span><\/p>\n

And finally, Pretorius points to the fact that\u00a0bearing\u00a0remanufacture reduces material consumption;\u00a0bearings\u00a0not eligible for remanufacture can be recycled to produce new\u00a0bearings, effectively closing the loop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SKF\u2019s Mechanical Field\u00a0Service\u00a0team stepped in to ensure that the\u00a0bearings\u00a0are correctly fitted by using a selection of Mapro mounting tools including a\u00a0bearing\u00a0heater, hydraulic nuts and spanners; a C-Spanner was purchased by the customer.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to providing a baseline vibration monitoring required by the customer to ensure that the\u00a0equipment\u00a0passes all the necessary requirements before commissioning,\u00a0SKF\u2019s Connected Technologies team was also able to provide baseline readings on other critical\u00a0equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n

The complete\u00a0SKF\u00a0solution includes condition monitoring; vibration and temperature data is collected in real-time and is analysed to identify potential issues on the\u00a0bearings. Alongside extending\u00a0bearing\u00a0life and increasing mean time between failures (MTBF), condition monitoring and data analytics also identify potential\u00a0bearing\u00a0failure, enabling the unit to be removed timeously for\u00a0repairs\u00a0or replacement, reducing the risk of costly production stoppages.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pretorius sums up the sustainability benefits of\u00a0SKF\u2019s turnkey\u00a0solutions: Benefits for our customer include increased\u00a0service\u00a0life, machine and\u00a0equipment\u00a0reliability and lifecycle as well as operator\u00a0safety\u00a0with all the related cost savings. These factors are fundamental to ensuring\u00a0sustainable\u00a0operations. Furthermore, reduced material consumption, direct\u00a0energy\u00a0consumption and emissions as a result of our reman process reduce the impact on the\u00a0environment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Pretorius confirms that the work for the customer is ongoing. \u201cWe have identified more areas where we can add further value for our customer and are bringing our other departments on board to lend their professional expertise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
